Central Asia
His Highness the Aga Khan: Photo Gallery Hh_central_asiaHis Excellency Emomali Rahmonov, President of Tajikistan), and His Highness the Aga Khan sign the International Treaty establishing the new University of Central Asia in a ceremony in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on 28 August 2000. The University is based on the recommendations of an Organisational Commission appointed by President Rahmonov and the Aga Khan in 1997. The main campus of the new university will be based in the town of Khorog in Southern Tajikistan. At the signing ceremony, His Highness announced a gift of $5 million to the University's endowment earmarked for activities in Tajikistan.

The University will establish programmes and activities in Eastern Kyrgyzstan that will be an integral part of its overall educational offerings. At the signing ceremony, His Highness announced a gift of $5 million to the University's endowment earmarked for activities in Kyrgyzstan.

Once the Treaty is ratified by at least two of the three Founding States, the University will come into being as a single legal entity in the region. The Charter provides for other countries to join as Participating States once the University comes into operation.

Hubert Védrine and the Association Aga Khan, a French entity whose members include some of the principal agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network. The Accord seeks to create close links between the Ministry and the Association in the fields of humanitarian assistance and social, cultural, and economic development to enhance the Association's activities in countries where the Network's agencies are present.
