WHO collaborates with Department of Emergency Medicine at AKU

World Health Organization (WHO) has recently collaborated with Aga Khan University’s Department of Emergency Medicine, designating it as a WHO Collaborating Centre in Emergency Medicine and Trauma Care. This is the first such designation in the field of emergency medicine in the developing world.
The Centre will be the fifth WHO-collaborating centre in Pakistan, the other four focussing on Diabetes through the Diabetes Association of Pakistan, Medical Education through the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan, Blindness through the Al Shifa Foundation, Islamabad and Mental Health through the Rawalpindi Medical College.
The main function of the WHO Collaborating Centre will be to assist the region in developing capacity in emergency care as well as to conduct research on emergency medicine and trauma.
Established in July 2008, AKU’s Department of Emergency Medicine caters to approximately 60,000 patients annually, of which more than 40 per cent are admitted to AKUH. Apart from providing timely care to patients needing emergency treatment, it also offers outstanding educational opportunities for medical, nursing and allied health personnel to further their medical knowledge in pursuit of research. The Department’s highly skilled trauma team of Emergency and Trauma Care trained physicians and nurses provide treatment around the clock, seven days a week.
