Toronto, 14 October 2010 — Mawlana Hazar Imam arrived in Toronto today, where he will deliver this year’s lecture at the 10th annual LaFontaine-Baldwin Symposium.

Founded in 2000 by prominent Canadian essayist John Ralston Saul, the LaFontaine-Baldwin Symposium features high-profile guest speakers who address relevant issues of the day and engage Canadians in a national conversation around the future shape of Canada’s civic culture. Past speakers have included Beverley McLachlin, Chief Justice of Canada; Louise Arbour, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; and Adrienne Clarkson, former Governor General of Canada.

The Symposium, an initiative of the Institute for Canadian Citizenship, is named after Louis-Hippolyte LaFontaine and Robert Baldwin, the 19th century architects of responsible government — the democratic concept that governments are accountable to parliament and dependent on the confidence of the legislature. The laws that they enacted between 1848 and 1851 would become the foundation of modern Canada.
