AKU-EB recognises high achievers
November 3, 2010
High achievers who topped the list of students appearing in Aga Khan University Examination Board’s Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) exams were presented certificates at an annual Student Awards Ceremony on November 3, at the AKU Auditorium.
Out of the AKU-EB students who appeared in annual exams in 22 cities across Pakistan in May 2010, 142 students were awarded in the categories of ‘Best Subject Result’, ‘Top Group Positions’ (science, humanities, commerce, pre-engineering, pre-medical and general science) and ‘Overall Top in Pakistan’ for SSC and HSSC.
The overall top position in SSC exams was shared by Anum Zehra Raza of Al-Murtaza School and Marvi Ahmad of FFC Grammar School, while Mohammad Aziz of Aga Khan Higher Secondary School Karachi secured the top position in HSSC exams.
Speaking in the presence of Chief Guest, Engr Abul Kalam, Vice Chancellor, NED University of Engineering and Technology, Mr Firoz Rasul, President, AKU, highlighted that the students present at the Awards Ceremony represent the top two per cent of high achievers in the AKU-EB SSC and HSSC examinations. “Your hard work, even in times of pressure, has brought a lasting and positive result. You have demonstrated that you have the drive, determination and intellectual potential to be the next generation of leaders in business, health care education, academia and government,” said Mr Rasul, encouraging the students.
President Rasul also drew the audience’s attention to the Examination Board’s current initiative of introducing a Middle School provision to facilitate the transition to, and better prepare students for, success at the secondary and higher secondary levels. Towards this end, AKU-EB has been conducting professional development workshops for the past two months in Karachi and Lahore. Aimed at promoting active learning and enquiry in students, these workshops have brought together 650 Grade Eight teachers from across Pakistan to help middle school teachers align the course of study and assessment. By next year, syllabi for Grade Eight subjects will be introduced followed by syllabi for Grades Six and Seven in 2012.
“You have come through an education and crossed a major hurdle designed to prepare you for a truly demanding university career and all the rewards that go with it,” said Dr Thomas Christie, Director, AKU-EB in his vote of thanks. His speech was followed by an entertaining performance by a group of students from IISAR Foundation, concluding the evening.
